ITSIG Convenor’s Report 2010

ITSIG Committee members in 2010 were John Laurie (Convenor, University of Auckland), Bob Pearson (Treasurer, University of Auckland) Peter Kennedy (University of Canterbury), Paul Sutherland (Christchurch City Libraries), Helen Brownlie (University of Otago) and Kim Salamonson (Hastings District Libraries). Thanks to these people for their contributions.

ITSIG has had an active year with some significant new activities. These will culminate in the one day bar camp on the day after the LIANZA Conference, on Thursday 2nd December.

The 2009 LIANZA Conference ITSIG workshop was well attended again, with good discussion, and presentations from Peter Kennedy (Assistant Manager, Library IT, University of Canterbury Library) on converting a staff intranet to a wiki, Paul Hayton (Electronic Services Coordinator, Dunedin Public Library) on Web 2.0 at Dunedin Public Library, and Paul Sutherland (Digital Innovation Librarian, Christchurch City Libraries) on life in Flickr. Kim Salamonson, of Hastings District Libraries, joined the committee.

Sponsorships were offered to enable ITSIG members to attend the NDF and VALA conferences. There were no takers for the NDF but $1725 was spent to help Warren Curran, Systems Librarian at the Manukau Institute of Technology attend VALA in Melbourne. His REPORT is on the ITSIG wiki.

A test version of the ITSIG wiki was set up on PBWORKS, which is a free site and offers better uploading and text editing facilities. However, LIANZA have been working on improving their own web site and it was decided to remain with the current ITSIG wiki in the meantime with a view to migrating to the LIANZA website when it is ready.

Monthly committee meetings have been held online since the beginning of 2010, at first on Skype and then on Webex and KAREN Scopia webinar/meeting software. Webex and Scopia have been successfully tested as meeting platforms.

A further Scopia session on 18th November tested the software in lecture mode with a larger audience. This was generally successful with the experienced users who participated. The webcast version worked OK. It is possible to record password protected sessions for anytime access. A series of informal webinars is planned for 2011.

Congratulations to Helen Brownlie, Paul Sutherland and Kris Wehipeihana for setting up the first ITSIG bar camp in conjunction with the LIANZA conference in Dunedin. ITSIG members have expressed great interest in bar camp type sessions and hopefully this will be the first of many more. ITSIG committed $1072 from its funds to subsidise costs to participants.

The customary LIANZA Conference workshop will be run again in 2010. It will be on Monday 29 November, from 12:45pm - 1:45pm, and include brief presentations from Helen Brownlie (University of Otago Library) on changing discovery experiences, Brian Flaherty (University of Auckland Library) on stitching costs and unified access to catalogues, licenced resources, repositories, and local indexes in a web-scale world, and Peter Kennedy (University of Canterbury Library) on Library-IT related issues arising from the recent earthquake. The Annual General Meeting will follow.

ITSIG membership has slightly increased again since 2008 and 2009.

As I am (again) not attending the LIANZA Conference this year I would like to thank Peter Kennedy for offering to chair the AGM and workshop.

John Laurie (Convenor 2010)
