Other considerations
Restrictions in consortias and by vendors
DRM restrictions pain
Should we be looking at one digital Library for the whole of NZ (ie all NZ Libraries)?
Good idea but how will publishers view it? Will costs be higher? Will the digital purchase multiple copies?
What is the direction e-books going? Where are we going NZ Libraries we need to work together
LIANZA is establishing an e-lending and digital content taskforce. Watch this space…
APLM are working with publishers http://www.publiclibrariesofnewzealand.org.nz
Put our eight behind those who are making most sense
Market Place how can we as Libraries etc help?

US Libraries buy direct from publisher but not all mainstreams publishers
Demarks has similar where publisher supply bookshelf and Libraries pay for what they download
Complain globally to Publishers etc about lack of content and restrictions

Other e-book options

Bolinda
Ebsco
Smashwords
Work creatively with vendors / publishers and also innovately to maximise e-book packages and DRM restrictions copyright etc.

Whats happening around DDRM & Copyright?
Do we need to form a working party.
Don’t forget the Transpacific partnership DRM Copyright etc on the table http://opac.lianza.org.nz/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?bib=405
also media coverage

http://www.lianza.org.nz/news/2012/jul/5/lianza-fears-copyright-law-changes-under-tppa

IFLA

http://www.ifla.org/en/publications/library-statement-on-trans-pacific-partnership-agreement-negotiations

IEEE standards for e-book Bill of rights for e-book users / lenders be made / accepted

Legal deposit of e-books? Does it happen? Can they be borrowed? Apparently yes its happening no they can’t be borrowed.

What are e-books
Debate on Software vs books

Standards and DRM differ between publishers

Eg TOR Books none
Harpercollins 26 issues then have to pay for a new e-book
Wheelers you own what you buy.

Other E-book Issues
Publishers creating friction for libraries
Can it be easy to download like itunes?
Staff time intensive
Lack of experienced staff in helping customers download e-books as well as help them to use e-readers
Lack of knowledge
Lack of staff trained to help with e-books issues
Maybe need a site like “AnyQuestions” ie “AnyE-books” devoted to helping customers with e-books issues etc. people rostered on set timeslots from around the country.so people can ring / logon for help and support
Not all staff use e-books or have even tried e-books
Staff - upskill ones who are interested maybe run classes?
Some libraries running e-books classes and one on one classes.

Can we share class info / helplets / flyer we have made
Can we make videos and share on Youtube etc.
What happened to the APLM Roadshow that was being run it never went to all cities etc.
Can IT-SIG or regional SIGs sponsor e-book training? And idea can ask Can we request more training from our vendors? Yes we should ask all of us.
IT Wiki will create helplets for e-books http://lianzaitsig.pbworks.com/w/page/27587931/ITSIG%20WIKI  Watch this space

Create a discussion List for E-books

E-Books taskforce?

Look at consortia setting for e-books

Support for patrons should this be our role?
