Convenor's Report 2013

DigLib-SIG Convenor’s Report 2013

ITSIG Committee members in 2013 were John Laurie (Convenor, University of Auckland), Bob Pearson (Treasurer, University of Auckland) Peter Kennedy (University of Canterbury), Paul Sutherland (Christchurch City Libraries ), Helen Brownlie (University of Otago), Ngai Deckard (Central Hawke's Bay District Council and Libraries), Ruth Lewis (National Library of New Zealand) and Kim Salamonson (Hastings District Libraries). Thanks to these people for their contributions.

DigLib-SIG Membership remains steady at around 110 people and organisations.

The Annual General Meeting was held online on 15th November, 2012. Notice was circulated to members via the DigLib-SIG list and there were fourteen members in attendance, four more than the quorum. Ruth Lewis joined the committee and a motion was carried to change the SIG name from Information Technology Special Interest Group (IT-SIG) to Digital Library Special Interest Group (DigLib-SIG).

The IT-SIG listserv and Wiki were updated with the new name and a new logo (contributed by Kim Salamonson).

Monthly committee meetings continued to be held online, using the REANNZ/KAREN Scopia meeting platform.

DigLib-SIG spent $500 to sponsor Nat Torkington's presentation, "Putting it all together,"  at the LIANZA Conference. Nat Torkington is an IT consultant and co-founder of Open New Zealand, an organisations aimed at making central and local government useful to citizens and businesses. He also runs the annual Kiwi Foo Camp. His presentation was one of the highlights of the Conference.

An Unconference/bar camp was held on the day after the LIANZA conference in the Bill Gallagher Events Room on the WINTEC Hamilton Campus, and attracted 18 participants,  the majority from public libraries.Topics covered included e-books and e-book devices, photo collections, repository platforms, 3D printers, authentication, Kete and  the Aotearoa People's Network Kaharoa, social media, RFID, QR codes and security.

The total cost of the bar camp was $876.25 of which $480 was recovered in fees. DigLib-SIG has also agreed to reimburse airfares from Christchurch for Paul Sutherland, the Unconference organiser and facilitator. There is more information about the Unconference on the DigLib-SIG Wiki at http://lianzaitsig.pbworks.com/w/page/70461220/Digital%20Libraries%20Un

Substantial editing was carried out and new content added to the DigLibSIG Wiki over the year.

Plans for informal online meetings to discuss various "products" did not eventuate, and a DigLib-SIG workshop scheduled for the second day of the LIANZA Conference had to be canceled once again when we realised that the e-Lending and Libraries workshop and three other presentations on Digital Library topics had been scheduled for the same time-slot. This must not be allowed to happen in 2014.
